Popular Aberdeen bar puts up outdoor marquee without permission, now they might have to remove it

Soul Bar is one of the bars that has applied to have its opening hours extended.

A popular city centre marquee could be removed permanently following the advice of council planners.

Soul Bar on Union Street erected the structure, which contains heaters, for smokers and outdoor diners without planning permission two years ago.

But retrospective planning permission has since lapsed, and the bar owners PB Development Company have been told to remove it.

The firm have now applied to keep the area for a further three years with the bid due in front of the council’s local review body next Wednesday.

However officers have recommended that councillors refuse the application.

A report to members reads: “Due to its inappropriate quality, design and material the temporary structure detracts from the setting and character of the listed building and visual amenity within the wider conservation area by reason of its prominent position in public view on Union Street.”

But last night angry company boss Paul Clarkson urged councillors to “show common sense” and vote to allow the structure.

The operations director said: “As a company we are disappointed at the decision by council planners.

“We feel that it is only a temporary structure which can be easily removed and is very popular with our customers.

“Everyone is trying to do their best to bring things back to Union Street but they want to take away what is a very popular draw for people.

“Hopefully the councillors will see common sense since they have said renovation of Union Street is such a big priority.”
