Work on a new multimillion-pound car park at the north-east’s flagship hospital will begin next month.
The £10million, 1000 space facility at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) was approved by the council last month and is expected to be completed in July next year.
The development has been made possible by a donation of £10.73million from Sir Ian and Lady Helen Wood’s charity, the Wood Foundation.
The work will begin on Monday, October 10 and from that date the existing visitor car park will be closed.
During the construction period visitors are encouraged to use public transport, park elsewhere and arrange a lift if possible.
Parking allocation at the children’s hospital, maternity unit and the Rotunda entrance to the ARI will remain unchanged.
Gary Mortimer, director of acute services and chairman of the Foresterhill parking project board, thanked The Wood Foundation for the donation.
“The parking challenges we face on this site are well known.
“On a typical working day some 13,000 vehicles come to Foresterhill, we have around 2,500 spaces at present.
“The cost of developing a facility like this could not be met from NHS budgets.
“We are incredibly grateful to The Wood Foundation for their generous donation.”
Sir Ian Wood added: “The Wood Foundation is delighted that work on the new multi-storey car park at Foresterhill Health Campus is getting underway early next month, and projected for completion July 2017.
“Like everyone else, we deeply regret what will be significant traffic disruption on the site and that parking will be even more difficult in the interim period.
“We can only ask that people show extreme patience and forbearing in the knowledge that the car parking position should be very significantly improved from the middle of next year.”
