A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of an Aberdeen dad.

Darren Barnes, also known as Riley, appeared in private at the city’s sheriff court, accused of killing Robert Reid.

The 26-year-old amateur boxer was found dead in a flat in the Mastrick area earlier this week, prompting a major police investigation.

Emergency services were called to Arnage Place at about 5am on Wednesday following concerns for a member of the public, and found Mr Reid inside.

The call came just hours after neighbours reported hearing a disturbance outside.

Witnesses said the victim – who had a young son with fiancee Jackie Hanratty – was seen at around 1.45am outside the flat, following a loud argument.

Following the grim discovery, police sealed off several streets and began a forensic examination of the upper floor flat.

They also carried out door-to-door inquiries around Arnage Place, Arnage Terrace, Arnage Drive and other streets close to the scene.

Search teams meanwhile could be seen working their way through surrounding gardens, bushes and bins.

Riley was kept under police guard at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and charged on Thursday.

During the court hearing yesterday, the 28-year-old made no plea or declaration. His case was continued, but a date for his next appearance has not yet been set. He was remanded in custody.

In the days since the incident, floral tributes have been left outside Mr Reid’s family home.

Mr Reid had been a celebrated amateur boxer, and took part in the sport alongside his older brother, Stewart. The duo were successful in a number of high profile competitions.

On Wednesday, Aberdeen Amateur Boxing Club, based at the Cummings Park Community Centre, paid tribute to their former star member.

In a statement, the group said: “It is with much sadness that the Aberdeen Boxing Club has heard of the tragic death of former Aberdeen Boxing Club member Robert Reid.

“Robert was an outstanding junior boxer who, along with his brother Stewart, picked up junior and youth titles in their very successful careers.

“Our thoughts are with Robert’s family, his mum and dad and his brother Stewart at this time. Rest in peace Robert.”
