The run is expected to attract thousands of visitors from all over the UK to Aberdeen.

But Steve Harris, chief executive of Visit Aberdeenshire, said it would also provide an opportunity to showcase what the rest of the north-east has to offer as well.

He said: “We’ve got a fantastic partner in The Great Run company, we know these people can deliver these events, what’s even more important is we know they can grow these events.

“The ambition in a few years time has to be to take this from a half marathon to a full marathon, and look at including Aberdeenshire in the plans.

“It’s an event that will be great for local people all across the region, but also it will bring loads of visitors from across the UK to the area.

“In particular we’re keen to attract a lot of people up from England. We’ve chosen to hold it on an English bank holiday at the end of the summer especially for this purpose.

“The wonder of this event is there’s people that like to do them all, all over the UK, and they’ll see Aberdeen as a new venue along their journey of running, so we expect to see a lot of people from England making the journey north.

“And we’re advertising it right through Europe as well, so we’re hoping to draw in a good number of international runners too.

“It’s a great opportunity to show a very large number of people what we have to offer.

“What we hope will happen is they will come up, do the run, and spend a good few days up here exploring this wonderful part of the world.”
