An Aberdeen charity has launched its annual Christmas appeal with a plea to businesses to join its crusade.
Aberdeen Cyrenians is asking for donations from local companies, faith groups, and individuals to keep them going through the winter months.
It is the charity’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and more than 2,500 letters have been sent out appealing for support this week.
Scott Baxter, depute chief executive, said: “The main thrust of the appeal is to give us financial help over the coming months.”
Over the last few months the charity has been getting busier due to the downturn, and has dealt with more than 400 appointments a month from people struggling with mental health or drug and alcohol problems, and homelessness.
Now the Cyrenians are preparing for even more people to come through the doors, given the worsening weather. The expect an influx of people needing to take advantage of their services, such as a free meal, laundry and showers.
But Mr Baxter said that the increase in the use of utilities meant an equal increase in bills, which is why they need the extra support.
He added: “During the winter, our costs go right up because we are cooking more food, the laundry is constantly going and the heating is on. It’s a very expensive time of the year for us.
“We’re appealing for items such as winter sleeping bags, winter clothing, underwear and we’ve got a constant need for men’s underwear. People will donate shopping vouchers, all that kind of stuff we can use.”
This year’s target is £50,000, with the deadline at the end of December.
Aberdeen Cyrenians will be open every day throughout December, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
