A charity fundraiser at Pittodrie had to be relocated last night as almost 800 homes and a trunk road were plunged into darkness by three separate power cuts.
The Dons had been due to host a charity event with Sodex but this had to be moved after the lights went off at the stadium around midday.
Traffic Scotland was also forced to issue warnings to motorists driving on the A90 Newtonhill to Stonehaven road after lights above the road went out.
SSE carried out remote investigations into the cause of the power cuts and restored electricity to households throughout the evening.
The shortage affected 237 properties in Alford and 554 in Aberdeen, Stonehaven and Newtonhill.
Pittodrie was the first spot to lose power at around midday just as players planned to get on board the team bus ahead of the club’s clash with Rangers tomorrow.
A spokesman for Aberdeen FC said:
“The power went off at around midday just as the players were getting ready to get on the bus to Glasgow.
“There are engineers working on it.
“The event in question was the first of the Christmas Parties, organised by the club and Sodex.
“It has been relocated to the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.”
Later in the day at 4.15pm the lights went out in 554 properties across Aberdeen, Stonehaven and Newtonhill and around 10 minutes later 237 sites in Alford were hit.
An SSE spokeswoman said: “There were two separate power cuts, one in Alford and another in Stonehaven ,Netwonhill and Aberdeen.
“The one in Alford took place at 4.25pm and affected 237 homes.
“The other took place at 4.15pm and affected 554 homes.
“The A90 was affected by this between Newtonhill and Stonehaven.”
A Bear Scotland spokeswoman said: “We’ve been made aware of a power fault which is affecting road lighting on the A90 in the Newtonhill area, however SSE are working to fix the issue.
“In the meantime Traffic Scotland are adding messages to the overhead Variable Message Signs to advise motorists of the fault in advance.”
