Hundreds give their view on new £20million plans for Union Terrace Gardens

More than 500 people have taken part in a survey on the future of Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens.

Council chiefs unveiled the £20million plans for the sunken Victorian green space last week and are conducting a “public engagement exercise” until Friday.

The ambitious proposals, put forward by renowned London Olympic park outfit LDA Design, include new lift access from Union Terrace, a “halo” lighting feature and community gardens alongside the rail track.

A new entrance plaza and cafe pavilion opposite His Majesty’s Theatre and a “grand staircase” as part of a central route into the gardens from Rosemount Viaduct are also part of the plans.

Council leader Jenny Laing said: “The proposals have generated enormous interest, excitement and comment across the city.

“We would welcome all feedback on the UTG proposals as the masterplan belongs to the people of Aberdeen.”

The plans were on display at The Academy shopping centre in Belmont Street over the weekend, where members of the design team answered questions from hundreds of visitors.

Deputy council leader Marie Boulton added: “LDA Design’s team have been out gathering views and will use the feedback to help produce detailed designs which further embrace the public’s ideas and wishes.

“I would encourage everybody to study what’s on offer and to have their say by completing the survey, so we get the best result possible for the city and its residents.”

Detailed designs are expected to go to a meeting of the full council in March. If approved, work would start next year with a target completion date of autumn 2019.

But opposition SNP group leader Stephen Flynn said that the authority should consider extending the consultation period to give more residents a voice.

He said: “We need to hear more voices and I would urge more people to come forward so we can hear what they’ve got to say.

“I can understand that there may be some ‘consultation fatigue’ among the public, particularly when it comes to UTG, but it is important we know the public opinion and it’s something that we need people to comment on.”

The exhibition is currently on at Christmas Village, Union Terrace, until Friday between 11am and 6pm, except Thursday, when it opens until 8pm.

Display boards can be found at Marischal College, week days from 8.30am to 5pm until Friday.
