Dons fan jailed for six months after abusing Celtic fan and police before League Cup Final

A Dons fan has been jailed for six months and given a three-year football banning order after aiming a disgusting tirade of abuse at police before a showpiece match.

Kevin Goffin was arrested at Glasgow’s Central train station on the day Aberdeen faced Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers saw him behaving aggressively in the station’s concourse shortly before 2pm on November 27.

Thirty-five-year-old Goffin then “acted inappropriately” towards a Celtic fan at the station’s Marks & Spencer store.

And he became “increasingly hostile” when approached by BTP officers.

He launched a “torrent of homophobic, intimidating and violent abuse” towards officers, which continued all the way to police custody.

Goffin, of Kincorth Circle, Aberdeen, admitted breaching the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Acts when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

As well as being jailed, he was given a three-year football banning order.

Sergeant Michael McEwan said: “Threatening or abusive behaviour will simply not be tolerated and I am pleased that this man has been handed a prison sentence.

“Goffin was travelling towards the Aberdeen v Celtic match, instead he spent his afternoon in police custody because of his irresponsible and violent behaviour.

“He will now spend the next six months behind bars and it will be three years before he can attend another football match.

“That is plenty of time for him to reflect on his actions.

“I hope his days of hooliganism are well and truly behind him.

“We are committed to protecting the travelling public from this kind of mindless hooliganism and we are satisfied our application for a banning order against him has been granted.”

Last night, a spokesman for Aberdeen Football Club welcomed the punishment handed to Goffin.

He said: “The club works very closely with the authorities in helping to ensure this type of incident – which these days is thankfully extremely rare – is eradicated from our game.

“The severity of the sentence sends out a clear message that behaviour like this will simply not be tolerated.”

The Dons lost the cup final, which was played at Hampden Park, 3-0.
