An Aberdeen man has thanked swimming pool staff who returned his prized wedding ring to him – more than three weeks after he lost it in the deep end.
Peter Mitchell had “given up hope” of ever seeing his £500 gold band again, and had even contacted his jeweller to make a replacement, after losing it on his daily dip at RGU: Sport on December 22.
The sprightly 74-year-old tries to swim at the university’s facilities everyday as part of his bid to lose weight.
However, his aquatic efforts proved rather too successful with his ring coming loose on his finger and slipping off, while he swam a length of the pool.
The former Press and Journal writer did not realise that it had come off until around 6pm in the evening when reading the day’s paper.
He said: “I looked down and noticed it was gone and went into a bit of a panic, turning the house upside down looking for it and retracing my steps through town.
“I’d given up hope of seeing it again when today, on Friday the 13th of all days, I got a call from the wonderful staff at RGU telling me they had recovered it.
“It’s absolutely amazing, I can’t thank them enough.”
Hannah Leslie, operations development manager at RGU SPORT, said: “We were delighted to be able to help Peter and return his wedding ring to him.
“All of our instructors and staff members are proud to play a part in improving the health and wellbeing of people in the north east and the feedback we have received from Peter has brought a smile to all of our faces.”
