A north-east charity has launched a competition to give youngsters the chance to create a sculpture to boost their campaign to raise £1million towards a world-class cancer research unit.

Friends of Anchor launched their landmark 20for20 project yesterday, which will involve 20 decorated anchor sculptures being dotted around the north and north-east.

The charity is now looking for schools to take part in a competition to create the design for one of the anchors, which will be displayed in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Orkney and Shetland.

The 20for20 School Art Competition is now open to all primary schools in the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary catchment area.

Friends of Anchor members are also keen to involve local artists in the design of the sculptures.

The anchor structures will be manufactured by the Balmoral Group, meaning that all money raised from the initiative can go towards the £1million target.

Chairman of Friends of Anchor, Jim Milne, and managing director of Balmoral Group said: “Youngsters’ creativity and collaboration will bring a very special and memorable aspect to this campaign and we look forward to seeing their designs.”

The winning school will receive £500 as well as a 5% bonus from the value achieved at the auction of their anchor at the end of the campaign. It is hoped that the winning monies will be used by the school’s art department.

Each anchor is available to sponsor at £10,000 -to find out more please contact the project team at friendsofanchor20for20@balmoral.co.uk or apply for a competition pack online at www.friendsofanchor20for20.org
