Police ‘piecing together’ movements of missing man after rucksack discovered near Cove clifftop

Police are working today to piece together the movements of a man feared missing following the discovery of a rucksack near a north-east clifftop.

Last night police, RNLI lifeboats and the coastguard began a search of the Cove area for Benjamin Ludwig, a 34-year-old German man.

Police were contacted at around 12.20pm by a member of the public who had seen a male wearing a red waterproof jacket in the same area the day before.

Officers say they were keen to establish if that was Mr Ludwig.

Search efforts have resumed this morning after being called off at around 7pm due to unsafe conditions on the coast.

Police say they are focusing on why the 34-year-old was in the area and whether Mr Ludwig is a permanent resident in the area or visiting as a tourist.

Inspector Rob Sturton, who is leading the inquiry, said: “Extensive coastline searches were launched following the recovery of items we believe belong to Benjamin.

“At this point in time we don’t know much about Benjamin or why he is in the North East and have a team of officers urgently trying to piece together his movements in the lead-up to his belongings being found.

“We understand Benjamin is a German national and may have only been in the area for a few days.

“As such I would appeal to anyone who knows him or who has seen a man matching his description to contact us as soon as possible.

“In particular I would appeal to any hotel or B&B owners who may recognise Benjamin as one of their guests, or bar or restaurant owners who may have served him to please contact us. Any information at all could be vital.

“Extensive coastline searches have been ongoing in the area overnight involving both the coastguard and lifeboat and are due to re-commence today.

“Our specialist Police Search Advisors will continue to work closely with HM Coastguard to co-ordinate these searches.

“Our main priority is to ensure Benjamin is safe and well and would urge anyone with information – or even Benjamin himself – to get in touch.

“We are also keen to establish if he was indeed the man wearing the red waterproof jacket at Cove. If you recognise this person as yourself please get in touch.

“Anyone with information should contact Police on 101.”
