Cycling village to be created in Aberdeen ahead of Tour Series visit

A cycling village will be created at Union Terrace Gardens for the Tour Series.
A cycling village will be created at Union Terrace Gardens for the Tour Series.

Aberdonians will be getting on their bikes when a cycling activity village is created in the city, ahead of the Tour Series arriving next week.

The village is being set up in Union Terrace Gardens, alongside the crowd-pulling series which pits top cycling teams against each other in courses up and down the country.

Aberdeen will stage the eighth round of this year’s contest on May 25. At the moment, JLT Condor tops the leaderboard, a point in front of Madison Genesis.

Other venues the tour is visiting in 2017 are Redditch, Stoke-on-Trent, Northwich, Wembley Park, Croydon, Bath, Motherwell, Durham and Stevenage.

A full programme of family activities is planned for the day.

Grampian Transport Museum is donating one of their interactive Smart Tacx Turbo trainers to The Tour Series activity village next week.

Turbo trainers allow riders to compete against themselves, and top cyclists, over some of the world’s most famous cycling routes in real time and offer the most realistic virtual cycling experience.

Several of the area’s leading riders have already taken the GTM challenge and their times are displayed on a Top Gear-type league table.

In addition to high-profile local riders such as John Entwhistle, pledges of support have also been received from Guy Martin.

Live performances from The Clan cycle stunt team will showcase a variety of technical skills by some of Scotland’s top stunt cyclists as part of their Trials Battle show at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. They will also be dropping into St Nicholas Street for a ground display at noon.

North-east rising star Daniel Kane, of Ythan Cycling Club, will take part in amateur races.

There will also be a series of games and giveaways with Aberdeen Sports Village.

Members of the local cycling community, including shops and clubs, will also be on hand to talk all things cycling.
