Aberdeen man drove wrong way along motorway… Then led police on 156mph chase across the border

Paul Robertson was jailed in July after speeding at 156mph away from police.
Paul Robertson was jailed in July after speeding at 156mph away from police.

An Aberdeen man led police on a cross-border chase at 156mph in his £50,000 sports car – after trying to drive the wrong way along a motorway.

Paul Robertson’s powerful BMW M3 was seized after the high-speed chase, which involved officers tailing him for 30 miles from Gretna to Penrith in England.

The 28-year-old hit 156mph at one point – one of the fastest speeds ever recorded by police in Scotland.

Yesterday, Robertson was warned he faced up to a year in jail.

Dumfries Sheriff Court heard police spotted Robertson driving out of a service station near Gretna the wrong way late on December 4 last year.

When he spotted officers, he raced away from them – leading them down the Glasgow to Carlisle road to just outside Penrith.

Robertson, of Donmouth Court, Bridge of Don, yesterday admitted driving dangerously by attempting to drive out of the petrol station the wrong way, accelerating harshly away from police, failing to stop and driving at speeds in excess of 156mph while it was dark.

The Crown now want to forfeit his sports car, and their application will be considered when he returns to court for sentencing.

Fiscal depute Jennifer McGill said: “The car is the subject of a seizure in respect of this matter and I’d be looking for forfeiture of that car on the next occasion.”

In the meantime, Robertson – who has a previous conviction for driving under the influence of drink or drugs – has been banned from driving.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb ordered background reports, but told the accused: “The period of the disqualification is a decision which I’m not making at this time – that will be decided in due course – but, for the moment, you’re disqualified ad interim.”

Sentenced was deferred until next month.
