Sport becomes a major part of university life for many students and netball fanatic Maxine Walker admits it has been one of the highlights of her university career so far.
The 22-year-old, from Aberdeen, has been involved in the university’s netball club since she embarked on her law degree and will return as its president next year, when she starts her law diploma.
Graduating with a first-class honours degree in law with French, Maxine said: “We play home and away every weekend and you get to meet a lot of people.
“My closest friends are from the netball club.
“It’s good to be involved.”
Talking about her role as president next year, she said: “I just wanted to give something back. I think I will have a bit more free time doing the diploma than I did doing the degree.”
Maxine, whose parents Nicola Johnston and Alan Walker, and sister Louise Walker, watched her graduate, has also been involved with the Aberdeen Law Project, which offers free legal advice to students who cannot afford to pay a lawyer.
“It has given me a lot of practical experience and it has been one of the highlights of being at university, alongside the netball club and also my dissertation on surrogacy law.”
Meanwhile, following in his big sister’s footsteps was law graduate Ryan Clark, 21, from Aberdeen.
His sister Lauren, 24, received her law degree from Aberdeen University two years ago.
The 21-year-old, who has secured a job with Deloitte, in Aberdeen, where he will train to be a chartered accountant,
said: “I think Lauren was happy when I decided to do law but she also gave me a few warnings about what to expect along the way.
“I wouldn’t have been as comfortable as I was without her advice and support.
“The first year was hard but once I got used to it, it became easier.
“I have really enjoyed my time here.
“The social side of it was brilliant and I have made a lot of friends for life.
“A lot of them are from Aberdeen so we will be able to keep in touch.”
Parents Karen and Derek Clark were also at the ceremony to help their son celebrate his success.
