Aberdeen’s deputy provost faces calls to step down after taking MSP job

Aberdeen’s deputy provost is facing calls to step down from his post having accepted an MSP position in Holyrood.

Councillor Tom Mason, who represents Rosemount and Midstocket, also serves as the deputy provost.

But following the success of the Conservatives at the recent general election, he has been elevated to the position of a north-east list MSP.

Mr Mason has said he will resign as deputy provost by the end of the summer recess, but intends to remain a city councillor and MSP.

The Conservative, Aberdeen Labour and Independent alliance has a slim one member majority at the council.

Tory Alan Donnelly is rumoured to be the replacement for Mr Mason in the deputy provost role.

But Aberdeen SNP group leader Stephen Flynn has called on Mr Mason to resign the role immediately.

He said: “It’s now two weeks since he found out he was going to be an MSP but he’s still clinging onto his senior councillors salary by his fingertips. Why has he not resigned this position yet?

“I believe that there should be a by-election so that the people of Midstocket and Rosemount can chose someone to represent them properly – I don’t think Tom will be able to juggle a dual-mandate for four years.”

Conservative group leader Douglas Lumsden said: “Last week, Councillor Mason made clear that his salary would be donated to the Gordon Highlander Museum and the charity Sue Ryder.

“It’s disappointing to see that Councillor Flynn is clutching at straws in a desperate attempt to stir up drama and bickering, both of which residents of Aberdeen have made clear they’ve had enough of.”
