A filthy mattress, bedside furniture and bagfuls of rubbish are just some of the items dumped by “mindless” fly-tippers on a scenic north-east route.
Outraged residents are upset at how lazy dumpers have blighted the picturesque Coast Road into the city centre.
Now a councillor has demanded that people pay more care and respect to the area.
The road, which takes motorists, pedestrians and cyclists between Cove, Altens and Torry has become a dumping ground for fly-tippers.
Several household items have been left discarded under a rail arch, with local residents becoming increasingly frustrated by the problem.
Councillor Alex Nicoll, who represents Kincorth, Nigg and Cove, said: “I was alerted to this issue by local residents who are rightly outraged by mindless individuals fly-tipping on what is one of our most scenic routes to and from the city centre.
“Both pedestrian and cycling routes in the area are currently being upgraded and, whilst there is no doubt that this will increase the number of folk using the area, the last thing they’ll want to encounter is someone else’s mess strewn across the ground.
“I have alerted council officials to the issue and they are making efforts to remove the waste but what we really need is for the individuals dumping their waste to show some care and respect for the community and just use the nearby recycling facilities.”
Coast Road isn’t the only area to be targeted by fly-tippers in Aberdeen recently.
In March, residents of Torry including community council members had to take to Victoria Street to clear up mattresses, empty cans and even a stripped-down car after deciding the build-up of junk had gone too far.
And chairs, beds and other furniture was left strewn around waste bins in Grandholme Bridge, Tillydrone earlier this month, prompting residents to question whether the council’s bin collection team had forgotten about them.
Coast Road has been targeted several times in the past, prompting the city council to install anti-fly tipping signs. One of the worst cases was in 2011, when piles of broken concrete and ornamental conifer were left strewn across the area, obstructing cars and larger vehicles.
An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “The fly-tipping in this area was reported to us last week and is in hand and will be cleared within the next few days.
“We would encourage people to report fly-tipping to us by using the ‘report it’ function on our website or by calling 03000 200 292 from 7.30am to 5pm, from Monday to Friday.”
