Plans for Spital shop get green light

Proposals to convert an office into a shop in the Spital area of Aberdeen have been recommended for approval by council planners, despite more than 200 local objections.

Spice of Asia (UK) Ltd has applied for permission for a change of use at the site.

Six letters of representation were submitted to the city council, along with a petition signed by 241 people.

Issues raised include potential problems with parking, increased traffic congestion and an over-provision of shops and licensed premises in the area.

However, in a report to members of the authority’s development planning management committee, head of planning Margaret Bochel said the proposal fits with local policies.

The unit lies within the Old Aberdeen/Balgownie conservation area, but the development is considered acceptable as there are no external works planned.

The council’s roads department has not objected to the application, and pointed out that there will be four parking spots at the proposed shop, an increase from three at present.

In comments included in the report, roads officials also state that, because the site is in an “inner city area”, many customers will walk, cycle or take the bus.

Committee members will be asked to approve the application at a meeting on Wednesday. (May 28)
