A north-east teenager has admitted to attacking a man, who he spotted with his ex-girlfriend on a night out in Aberdeen.

Sean Lynch saw Dayne Duffie with his former partner outside the Trinity Centre in the early hours of the morning and decided to follow the pair.

He eventually caught up with them on Bath Street where he struck Mr Duffie from behind before continuing to attack him, leaving him with a lump on his forehead.

He was called out for his behaviour before he threatened to attack any man he saw with his former partner.

Lynch then left the scene and entered the nearby Garage night club.

The couple, in a distressed state, told a doorman what had happened and the police were contacted and he was detained at 7.50am that morning.

An ambulance was also sent to the scene to deal with the swelling which had emerged on Mr Duffie’s forehead.

The 19-year-old confessed to the attack, which took place on July 1 this year, during an appearance at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday.

Representing him, defence agent Peter Keene revealed his client’s misfortunes which had caused him to feel such anger.

He said: “This was a shameful incident.

“The woman has been his girlfriend since he was 14.

“He is unemployed, but had a job in the offshore industry but along came the downturn and he lost his job and at that age he got no compensation.

“This put a strain on their relationship and he later found out some heart-breaking discoveries.

“He pleaded guilty at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Sheriff Malcolm Garden said to Lynch: “You really need to grow up and start to take responsibility.

“This was an unprovoked attack which caused an injury which you could go to custody for if it wasn’t your first offence.”

Lynch, whose address was given as Seaton Place East, was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work within six months.
