Jail term for repeat drive ban man, 24, who took to wheel again

A north-east man is behind bars after being caught behind the wheel for the sixth time while disqualified.

Jeff Binnie was jailed in 2012 and banned from the roads for 10 years after being caught driving at speeds of up to 103mph between Aberdeen and Portlethen.

But in July this year the 24-year-old decided to get into the driver’s seat once more.

He was spotted by someone who knew him on Heathryfold Place in Abderdeen in the early hours of the morning and was detained by police shortly afterwards.

Binnie appeared in Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday to be sentenced for his latest road traffic offence.

The court heard he had also taken his anger out on a vehicle on Mansefield Road in Torry, Aberdeen, on March 27 by kicking it.

When officers turned up he attacked Constable Robert Graham-Park by butting him and spitting at him.

He also admitted failing to appear at court on June 21.

Representing Binnie, defence agent Laura Bell said he was attempting to come to terms with his problems.

She said: “He has taken responsibility and pleaded guilty.

“He is a young man at 24 with a lengthy record, there is no getting away from that.

“He lost his father some years ago and that is something that he has never really dealt with.

“He is also struggling with unemployment and being unable to see his son.

“It is the first time he has sought help for his issues.

“He is aware that a custodial sentence is a possibility but he plans to live with his grandfather if he is released.

“He runs a painting and decorating company, there is the opportunity for work.”

Sheriff Christine McCrossan said: “I’m afraid there is no alternative to a custodial sentence.

“You have driven six times while disqualified in the past, taken your anger out on other people’s property and assaulted a police officer.”

Binnie, whose address was given as Manor Avenue in Aberdeen, was jailed for 20 months.
