A security breach at Marischal College has sparked a plea to city council staff to be vigilant at all times.
On Monday a member of the public, who was known to members of staff for a “history of challenging behaviour,” was found inside a secure staff-only area of the office complex.
A council worker was said to have been “tailgated” by being followed through a security door.
An urgent email sent to all employees at Marischal College following the incident said: “The barriers alarmed both visibly and audibly, as they are programmed to, but our member of staff neither challenged the intruder or reported the matter to facilities management.”
Members of staff are now being encouraged to “politely challenge” anyone they believe is attempting to follow them into a secure area.
Key security messages have also been circulated to staff in the wake of the incident via email and team briefings.
When asked if any staff members had been put in danger as a result of what happened, an Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “The safety and security of staff is very important which is why they were informed of the incident and reminded of their responsibilities of security in our buildings.”
