A waste and recycling centre in Aberdeenshire is closed “until further notice” after one of its employees received an electric shock from a piece of machinery.

The council-run Redcloak facility on Stonehaven’s Slug Road was shut down following the incident which happened sometime in the morning.

An unnamed male employee was taken to his local GP for medical attention and was later said to be recovering at home.

As electricians worked to make the facility safe, residents were greeted by a sign at the gate reading “Site closed due to incident” and apologising for any inconvenience.

Stonehaven Community Council chairman Phil Mills-Bishop was shocked at the news.

He said: “I hope the member of staff concerned recovers quickly and that the nature of the incident is quickly identified and corrected by Aberdeenshire Council so that the centre can re-open as soon as it is safe to do so.”

None of the emergency services were called out to the incident.

The Health and Safety Executive said it had “been made aware of the incident and we will be liaising with Aberdeenshire Council”.

A council spokesman confirmed the exact cause of the malfunction was still unknown last night.

“A member of staff was injured at Redcloak Recycling Centre, Stonehaven this morning,” he said.

“The employee received an electric shock from a piece of machinery at the site. He was taken to his local GP and is now recovering at home.

“The site was closed immediately and we have called electricians to inspect the machinery for faults. “The site will remain closed until further notice.”

Centre users are being re-directed to recycling centres at Laurencekirk and Portlethen until the site re-opens.
