Mics at the ready as north-east students lip sync for a charitable cause

The final of Albyn School's LipSync battle. Bruno Stars perform onstage.

North-east students put on a show hosting a lunch-time lip sync battle with the target of raising over £1,000 for a cancer charity.

Students from Albyn School in Aberdeen are supporting Friends of Anchor and yesterday their efforts saw three acts contest the final.

The young performers making up Bruno Stars, SKL KIDS and Marisha dazzled a four person judging panel that included busker Chris van der Wal, who sang live on stage with The Script at the AECC last month.

There could only be one winner, however, and it was Bruno Stars, a tribute to Bruno Mars with a Michael Jackson twist.

Euan McKnight, Miles Beeson, Mateus Grebogi, James Young, Viyom Varma and lead-man Feranmi Oluwadayomi sang ‘The Lazy Song’ and ‘Thriller’.

They triumphed despite the additional obstacle of breaking a guitar midway through their performance.

Friends of Anchor’s fundraising coordinator Carly Davidson was also on the judging panel and she was delighted to be part of the school’s efforts.

She said: “I am a former pupil and my daughter is here today. It’s great to come back and see how musicality and charity can come together.

“It was difficult being on the judging panel and all the acts did a fantastic job. We wanted a winner who had the best fun, though, and they guys had the full package.

“It’s great to all come together and raise awareness of the Friends of Anchor. Every penny raised will go to the charity.

Becky Milne, 37, who works at the school, was overwhelmed with emotion as she watched the pupils perform.

“It has been a really exciting thing to do. The emotion in the room was fantastic and the kids were right behind it.

“It’s really important for our children to see how the charity works and affects the local community in the north-east.”

As for the winners, they described their victory as “incredible” but said the most important thing had been raising money for the charity.

Within minutes of a brief on-stage celebration, the members of Bruno Stars returned to reality as classes resumed.
