Runners are being offered the rare opportunity to take-off down an airport runway for charity.

Hundreds are expected to sign up for a two-mile midnight dash around the airfield at Aberdeen Airport in June.

Dubbed the Runway Run, the event will raise thousands of pounds for three good causes operating in the north-east – Befriend a Child, Veterans with Dogs and Sue Ryder.

The last time runners has such an opportunity was back in 2013, but the organisers of this year’s run have promised it will be bigger and better than before.

Captain Ryan Broadhurst, a pilot with run co-sponsor CHC Helicopter, said: “I’ve always thought the Aberdeen Airport runway would be ideal for a charity run.

“It’s a reasonable distance at 2.2 mile (3.5km) and people probably don’t realise there is a bit of an incline as you head out onto the southern end of the runway, so it’s pretty challenging, without being too hard.”

Carol Benzie, the airport’s managing director, said the event would offer runners of all levels the opportunity to take part in “a truly exclusive and rare running event”.

“Our last runway run was hugely popular and this year’s event will accommodate five times the number of runners,” she said.

Each participant is required to pay a £25 entrance fee and raise a minimum of £100 for the chosen causes.

Runners can take part individually as part of a fun run, or enter a group of 12 whose scores will be aggregated in a team marathon.

The organisers have released 300 spaces for the run.

Places can be booked at www.aberdeenrunwayrun.co.uk.
