Micky Mouse and friends get their skates on in Aberdeen

As Aberdeen again drops to a wintery temperatures, what better time to see a show set on ice.

‘Disney on Ice Presents Worlds of Enchantment’ arrived last night to the granite city, continuing their UK wide tour.

Both young and old were mesmerised at the GE Oil and Gas Arena as iconic Disney characters danced across the stage.

The performance featured four original retellings of the classic Disney films Toy Story 3, Cars, The Little Mermaid and, of course, the ever popular Frozen.

Before the show officially started, kids were entertained by ‘Fit to Dance’ in which enthusiastic cheerleaders encouraged the audience to get moving, and keep hydrated.

Disney on Ice opened with the Toy Story gang escaping from the grasps of evil teddy bear Lotso, as seen in Toy Story 3. A highlight for all ages was the high-energy dance number “the toys are back in town” performed by the entire cast.

We were then transported to Ariel’s enchanted undersea kingdom from the Little Mermaid. Artistic liberties were taking with the mermaid’s costume – the costume team opted for green flared trousers rather than a traditional fishtail.

However the illusion was shattered for one young attendee, who exclaimed, “That can’t be Ariel, she has legs!”

After the interval (even if not a child, I recommend purchasing Olaf’s ice cone to alleviate potential headaches) Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars made a dramatic entrance with a high speed dance number.

The show closed with a blast of fresh air as Anna and Elsa from Frozen took to the stage. They shared the important lesson that true love comes from within, but I unfortunately missed most of the message, due to concentrating on how Sven the reindeer was managing to stay up on four ice skates.

Each performance was introduced by Micky Mouse, joined by classic characters such as Goofy , Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck. The characters put on their own ice skating shows as the sets were changed.

Children in the GE Oil and Gas Arena were clearly having an absolute blast following their favourite characters on the ice and singing along at the tops of their voices.

And, strangely enough, adapting to the likes of Lightning McQueen and Donald Duck gracefully ice skating came relatively easily, and I came to appreciate Buzz Lightyear’s abundance of pirouettes. The dances were perfectly choreographed, with not one skate being put wrong.

The selection of movies and characters covers all the bases, anticipating the diverse ages and interests of the kids watching. However younger children may not have the attention span for a show that pushed two hours including the interval.

Even for parents who couldn’t tell their Little Mermaid from their Little Mix it will certainly keep your kids busy for a few mesmerising hours.

Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment will be in Aberdeen from May 2 to May 6 at the GE Oil and Gas Arena. Tickets start from blank and can be purchased at www.disneyonice.com
