Motorcyclists have been told to take extra care as the warm weather brings more bikers out onto the roads.

North-east police responded to a number of collisions across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire over the weekend.

Three of those were described as “serious”.

Road Policing Sergeant Peter Henderson said: “At this time of year, and as part of Police Scotland’s National Motorcycle Safety Campaign, we are appealing to motorcyclists and other motorists to be aware of each other and to use the roads safely and responsibly.”

Temperatures peaked in Aberdeen this weekend with highs of 20 C in Aboyne on Sunday. In Aberdeen the heat was only slightly lower – peaking at 18C.

Motorcyclists have been encouraged to wear protective clothing and ride within their own capabilities.

Vented helments and vented leather jackets are useful to wear in warm temperatures to prevent overheating.

Sergeant Henderson said: “It is particularly beneficial for motorcyclists to ride defensively; looking as far ahead as possible and constantly scanning their surroundings for hazards, particularly on approach to junctions and bends.

“Drivers of other vehicles need to take extra care when exiting junctions to ensure the road is clear.

“It is also important to be aware of motorcycles approaching from behind and anticipate their intention to overtake you.”

Aberdeen’s short burst of summer is unlikely to last unfortunately.

The temperature is to return to 13c for much of the remainder of the week.
