A team who support people with neurological conditions everyday are gearing up to offer their help in another way – by sticking on their running shoes.

Sue Ryder Dee View Court is one of the charities that will benefit from this year’s Runway Run at Aberdeen International Airport on June 30.

And now 18 members of staff from the specialist neurological centre, which is aiming to raise £3.9million to build an extension, have signed up for the 3K midnight challenge.

Event organiser Captain Ryan Broadhurst, from CHC Helicopter, recently visited Dee View Court to meet residents and hear from the staff who provide specialist neurological care, rehabilitation and support.

He said: “It is inspiring to see so many staff members participating in the Runway Run. They work so hard to provide the care to the residents and are also willing to provide awareness and support in fundraising.”

The centre currently looks after 24 residents with a range of conditions, including Huntington’s disease, acquired brain injury and multiple sclerosis, but that number will increase to 44 once the refurbishment is complete in 2019.

The extension appeal – which would double the centre’s capacity – has already amassed £2.2million less than a year since it was launched.

Julie Scoullar, a clinical nurse specialist at the centre, is among those involved in the Runway Run.

She said: “Having worked at Dee View Court for nearly eight years, I am proud we are now at the stage of seeing the expansion happen.

“The opportunity to provide more people with residential care as well as supporting people out in the community in their homes will make all the difference.

“I took part in a Kilt Walk last year and loved the team spirit and fun involved. This event will be extra special with so many of us all getting involved in raising money and awareness for Dee View Court.”
