Sporting stars and prominent politicians have urged Aberdonians to get behind the city’s “other” football team ahead of the biggest game in its history.
Highland League outfit Cove Rangers take on Cowdenbeath on Saturday in a crucial tie that could win the team promotion to the Scottish Premier Football League (SPFL) for the first time.
The team won the game against the Blue Brazil after completing an aggregate win over Edinburgh’s Spartans.

Last night the city’s Lord Provost Barney Crockett went to see Cove players put through their paces during training in Garthdee.
And he wished the players the best for the weekend clash on behalf of the council and city residents.
Mr Crockett said that as a “Torry loon” he was proud to get behind the south-of-the-Dee team.
He said: “I love the role of Lord Provost as it goes from everything to meeting dignitaries to representing the city abroad.
“But when it comes down to it my home is Aberdeen and it is the community events like this that are the most important to me.
“It’s tremendous to see the achievements of the club and I wish them all the best for the weekend.
“We have a top level club with the Dons, but it is great to see the strides Cove are making and their fighting spirit and skill level.”
SNP councillor for Kincorth, Nigg and Cove Stephen Flynn said it was a “fantastic opportunity” for the club to get into the league.
He added: “I’m sure everyone not just in Cove but across the city will be rooting for them.”
City boxer Lee McAllister, who is in the early stages of launching a sports complex for disadvantaged people, said: “Anything that promotes the city’s sport is great and I would absolutely wish them the best.
“It is important to keep kids coming through the ranks and for the next generation.
“This is a massive opportunity for Cove and fingers crossed they can deliver.”
Cove manager John Sheran said: “It’s great we have everyone in Aberdeen sitting up and taking notice of Cove Rangers.
“Hopefully the Lord Provost brings us a bit of luck on Saturday.”
