Aberdeen has the highest proportion of foreign residents in Scotland – with one in four born outside the UK.
New figures from the National Records of Scotland show that, of the 228,000 people living in the Granite City, 55,000 were born outside Britain or Northern Ireland.
The statistics highlight that around 99,000 Poles call Scotland their home, by far the largest population of foreign residents ahead of Ireland’s 21,000.
Edinburgh has around 20% of its 497,000 residents born overseas while Glasgow has around 15% of its 593,000 residents.
Lord Provost Barney Crockett said he expected to see “ever greater internationalisation” of the city despite an expected drop in EU residents moving post-Brexit.
He added: “I think it’s great that we continue to attract people from across the world to live and work in the city.
“Any strategy for Brexit will involve making more links with the wider world”.
Conservative Aberdeenshire West MSP Alexander Burnett said: “The oil and gas industry over the last 40 years has allowed Aberdeen to welcome people from all over the world to work here and bring up a family.
“It is a great Scottish success story”.
