Flood alerts issued across mainland Scotland

An amber flood alert has been issued
An amber flood alert has been issued

Amber flood alerts have been issued for every part of mainland Scotland this afternoon.

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for torrential rain and thunder across the Highlands, Moray, and parts of central and northern Aberdeenshire.

And the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has put out an amber alert for flooding everywhere in Scotland but Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.

A statement from SEPA urged those living close to water to be prepared for flooding, and advised of a potential impact to travel plans.

It said “Heavy thundery downpours are likely to affect areas across Scotland during Friday and again on Saturday.

“It is currently not possible to define exactly what areas will be affected, and some areas will miss the worst of the heavy showers and thunderstorms.

“However, where these thunderstorms do occur they are likely to bring torrential rain.

“If these showers coincide with built-up areas, there is a risk of surface water flooding to properties and roads, and disruption to infrastructure and travel.

“There is also a risk of flooding to properties and roads from smaller rivers and watercourses if the heavy downpours occur over small urban or fast responding catchments.”

For advice and information, call SEPA’s Floodline service on 0345 9881188.
