An intrepid New Zealand woman has set off on an epic six-month journey from Aberdeen to Africa in tribute to her dad – and in a Morris Minor.
Laura Morrison took the first steps on her massive voyage as she drove away from the city’s Harvester restaurant while being waved on by cheering family members at the weekend.
The trip is something she and her father Neil, who is from Aberdeen, had dreamed of embarking on together but he died of cancer two years ago, aged 62.
Miss Morrison chose to begin the journey on the second anniversary of his death, and aims to raise £15,000 for the Cancer Society in his honour along the way.
After enjoying a fried breakfast with her loved ones, the 35-year-old explained the significance of the fundraising effort.
She said: “This has been a long time coming, with a lot of planning, and I’m really excited for it now.
“This will be an emotional day, and coming to my dad’s home of Aberdeen makes it more special.
“I hadn’t been here for a few years, so enjoyed visiting all the old haunts that he took me to when I was little.”
Her blue 1958 Morris Minor, which was passed on by her dad, has been emblazoned with the slogan “Morri 2 Africa” and the logo for the Cancer Society.
Miss Morrison stopped off at Dunottar Castle and Gleneagles on her drive to Edinburgh, and plans to take photographs of her car in other famous locations along her route.
She expects to reach Cape Town in six months and people can learn more on her website here.
