An Inverness graduate is hoping to use new his degree to brew up a storm in the Highlands.

Gavin Hanigan, 21, was joined by his parents, brother and girlfriend when he graduated at a special Aberdeen University ceremony at Elphinstone Hall yesterday with an honours degree in biochemistry.

The former Charleston Academy pupil said that once he completes his master’s in microbiology, he hopes to start work in the beer industry “from the scientific side of things”.

Mr Hanigan said: “It’s an amazing feeling to finally graduate, but also a bit daunting – it’ll be a big step to go on and do my masters in microbiology when I come back to university in September.”

Mr Hanigan said his experience in university has been challenging, but he’s looking forward to continuing his studies.

He added: “I’m going to be working a few zero-hour contract jobs before my master’s, and then once I’m finished with that the dream is to go on to work in brewing from the scientific side of things.

“There’s a good few breweries around Inverness, but I’ll work anywhere that’s interested in hiring a happy, kind of nerdy microbiologist who loves working in the lab.”
