An Aberdeen MSP has called for “urgent clarity” from the UK government over pension provisions in the event of a “no deal” Brexit.
Aberdeen Central SNP member Kevin Stewart wrote to the Department for Work and Pensions after meeting a British woman in Norway, who expressed fears her Norwegian state pension would not be paid following the UK’s departure from the EU.
Mr Stewart said: “We need urgent clarity from the UK Government that a deal on pensions will be agreed so folk are not left out of pocket.
“If you have made pension contributions while living in a EEA country and have returned home, it is not clear how these payments will be made following a so-called ‘no-deal’ Brexit.
“I have written to the UK Government for certainty that a pension deal will ensure pensions will be increased with inflation and that a reciprocal pension deal is in place to guarantee pensions will be paid out following Brexit.
“There must be a reciprocal pension deal and a ‘no-deal’ Brexit puts that in doubt.”
The DWP did not respond to requests for comment.
