Aberdeen City Council apologises to union over Bridge of Don Academy asbestos claims

Union bosses say they have received an apology from the city council after allegedly not being informed asbestos had been removed from an Aberdeen secondary school.

Unite had raised concerns that two janitors and another worker may have been exposed to the substance after it was uncovered at Bridge of Don Academy.

The council have since confirmed they removed the asbestos at the weekend but the union said their reps were only informed of the work on Wednesday.

A Health and Safety Executive investigation is under way.

Asbestos confusion means Bridge of Don Academy must stay closed, says union

Tommy Campbell, Unite regional officer, said “ While we accept their apology we have still not received any explanation as to why Unite reps were not briefed on the asbestos removal work the council says was undertaken last weekend.

“This reflects badly on the council because it took the Union yet again to complain that our reps are being kept in the dark for the council to tell us and the public that the academy is now safe to enter.

“We await with interest the council’s internal investigation report and the independent investigation the HSE are also carrying out.“

Aberdeen City Council declined to comment.
