Police appeal for information following ‘extensive damage’ caused at Aberdeen school

An Aberdeen school has been “extensively damaged” by vandals, just a day after its fire extinguishers were stripped out and discarded in a nearby play park.

Police are appealing for information after an alarm system at Kincorth Academy was tampered with and a number of windows were found to be broken.

The school has been closed since July 4.

Local sergeant John McOuat, who is leading investigations, said the behaviour of those responsible was “not smart nor clever,” and that “it certainly will not be tolerated”.

He added: “This is a disused building which no one should be entering.

“The person – or people – responsible for this are not only behaving in a completely unacceptable way but they are also putting themselves at serious risk of harm.

“To parents and guardians, I ask that you please keep an eye on where your children are going when they are not at school or at home.

“This report is being taken extremely seriously and our enquiries are ongoing working in conjunction with the local authority.

“To those who live in the local area and have seen or heard any disturbances since the beginning of the month, please get in touch.”

Police believe the vandalism took place within the last two weeks and currently investigating the total cost of the damage.

The news comes just a day after 40 fire extinguishers from Kincorth Academy were discovered strewn across a nearby skate park.

Martina Prout, who found and removed 13 of the extinguishers on Monday morning, expressed her fears over the situation.

She said: “I’m really hoping that no individual has decided it might be a good idea to keep some to thrown onto a bonfire.

“I hate to think what would happen if it was used on another child or teenager.”

An Aberdeen city council spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that the former Kincorth Academy building has been broken into and its safety equipment stolen.

“We are liaising with the police and the fire service over the matter.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
