Builder jailed for brutal attack on partner who wanted to break up

Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

A builder has been jailed for launching a savage attack on his partner.

Viaceslavas Kijaninas, 32,  admitted carrying out the “sustained” assault on Inga Jociute on Wednesday, October 31.

Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard that the couple moved to the city from Lithuania together in 2016 to seek work but separated last month.

Fiscal depute Alan Townsend said that on the night of the attack, Kijaninas had been drinking.

He said: “When Ms Jociute attempted to leave the kitchen, the accused grabbed her and threw her against a door.

“She told him to leave, but the accused followed her into the bedroom and grabbed her by the throat, pinning her against the wall before throwing her to the floor.”

The court heard that Kijaninas of Balnagask Road, Aberdeen, then placed his knee on the woman’s chest and “punched her to the face, head and body”.

Ms Jociute eventually fled into the street and raised the alarm, with neighbours describing her as “distressed” and already showing signs of bruising and swelling on her face and neck.

She was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with head injuries.

Defence agent Gail Goodfellow said Kijaninas had been off work for two months with a back problem and had taken to drinking.

She added: “That put a strain on the relationship but there is no doubt this was a particularly nasty assault.”

Sheriff Graham Buchanan said the “sustained” nature of the attack left him with no option but to jail Kijaninas for eight months.
