A world renowned running coach based in Kenya will talk at a local charity’s fundraising dinner next month.

Brother Colm O’Connell will speak at the Gathimba Edwards Foundation dinner on February 16 at Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen.

As a missionary brother of the Catholic Church, Mr O’Connell moved to Kenya from Ireland in 1976 and settled in the town of Iten, a place known for its athletes prowess.

He began to get involved in coaching and has now coached 37 Olympians, 15 world record holders and 18 major championship medallists including world 800m record holder and reigning Olympic champion David Rudisha.

Myles Edwards, founder of GEF, said: “It is an honor for us that Brother Colm will be travelling all the way from Kenya to speak at the event.

“He is a legend of our sport but despite this has a very humble and humorous nature.

“I am sure that guests will be inspired and entertained by his story.

“The previous two biennial dinners have helped us to get 300 children into school, build 31 houses and much more.

“We are determined to ensure this event has a similar impact.”

Tickets are still available for the event, which is headline sponsored by Phil Anderson Financial Services Ltd.

The charity would also be grateful for raffle or auction prizes. For more information contact info@gathimbaedwardsfoundation.org
