Plans for a £25 million community centre on the grounds of a former Aberdeen school have been given a major boost.
The Scottish Government has provided £2m towards the cost of the proposed facility, which would combine a primary school, housing office and community cafe on the grounds of the former Torry Academy.
Plans to lodge the now-disused building were lodged last month, with pupils in the area now going to the new Lochside Academy in Cove instead.
The project is one of 18 receiving money through the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, which has been developed with council body Cosla and local authorities across Scotland.
Co-leader of Aberdeen City Council, Jenny Laing, said: “We welcome this grant towards our new community hub in Torry, which will combine both community facilities and a new primary school.
“The £25m complex will also include expanded early learning and childcare provision, a new housing office and a cafe, and will be designed to create a vibrant hub for the local people of Torry suitable for many uses.
“We are growing community facilities all over Aberdeen as we recognise the importance they have for our residents and how they help to regenerate areas.”
Ward councillor Catriona Mackenzie said: “This is absolutely brilliant news for Torry, and I’m sure a lot of folk will be happy to hear it.
“Torry is full of amazing community groups and it is deserving of a fit for purpose hub, and this money is a real step forward to making that a reality.”
