International Workers’ Memorial Day to be marked in Aberdeen

Aberdeen Trade Union Council’s annual International Workers’ Memorial Day Service will be held on Sunday.

The service, one of many taking place around the world, will take place in the Persley Walled Garden, Bridge of Don at 1pm.

Wreaths will be laid and a minute’s silence observed, before a number of speakers from political parties and trade unions make speeches.

ATUC president Sasha Brydon said: “We know all about workplace deaths in this part of the world as we commemorated the 30th anniversary of Piper Alpha last year, when 167 workers were killed as a result of health and safety failures.

“And we are still seeing deaths at work.

“In Aberdeenshire last year – where there have been 15 work-related deaths since 2014 – three men were killed, and another man died in an Aberdeen workplace.

“Add that to the countless numbers of people injured or made ill at their work, as we see stress related absences rising, especially in councils which have taken the brunt of the cuts.

“We must continue to press for properly implemented health and safety legislation and regulation, and an end to austerity, which has seen public services, including the Health and Safety Executive trying to do more with less staff , with the knock on impact that has.

“Health and safety at work cannot be done on the cheap.”
