An Aberdeen woman will swim more than 200 lengths to thank the “angels” who got her back on her feet.
Gillian Craig suffered severe injuries to her legs after she was hit by a car while walking in Peterhead.
After initial surgery in 2015, the 51-year-old became a frequent visitor at Ward 214 – which specialises in plastics – at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Now she has decided to raise money for the ward to thank the staff who nursed her back to health.
Ms Craig will swim 214 lengths in tribute to the team, and started the challenge at Tullos Pool yesterday.
She said: “After the accident my legs were in a very bad way – they were extremely swollen.
“They essentially looked like two lumps sticking out from my waist.
“Plus, they were so swollen that I had to get a bariatric chair for my home to help me move around.
“At the time I was physically and mentally in a bad way, and actually had developed PTSD from the crash.
“But the nurses at Ward 214 were simply fantastic – they went above and beyond in helping me both physically and emotionally, and I just wanted to thank them somehow.”
Ms Craig, who lives in Rosemount, was going to attempt the fundraiser last year – but physical problems thwarted her efforts.
But she is determined to complete the task this time round, and is inviting people to donate to her fundraiser.
She said: “I also have fibromyalgia, which causes pain to my bones, so the swim will take time.
“But it will be worth it to give back to the ward, they deserve more recognition and support.
“People say nurses are angels – those at Ward 214 people certainly are.”
