A professor who spent more than 25 years treating north-east cancer patients has joined the board of Clan.

Marianne Nicolson will provide the cancer support charity with her decades’ worth of oncology experience.

She recently retired as a consultant medical oncologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but continues to lecture around the UK as well as advising on cancer grant committees and clinical trials groups.

Professor Marianne Nicolson and CLAN Cancer Support chief executive Dr Colette Backwell.

Clan, based in Westburn Road in Aberdeen, provides comfort, support and information to anyone affected by cancer.

It has expanded its presence throughout the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland.

Around 2,500 people are helped by the charity every year.

Prof Nicolson said: “While a consultant oncologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, I was impressed with the support and benefits that many of my patients enjoyed through attending Clan.

“It is my pleasure and privilege to become a member of the board of this charity that offers so much to people throughout the north-east of Scotland.”

Chief executive Dr Colette Backwell said: “Professor Nicolson’s extensive history of cancer treatment and her expertise in the field of cancer research will be of significant help to the board and the organisation as a whole.

“Our 12 board members all give their time and expertise freely, for which we are very grateful, and I am looking forward to working closely with Marianne and utilising her skills and experience to ensure that Clan continues to lead the way in cancer support services across the north-east, Orkney and Shetland.”
