Aberdeen’s Lord Provost was made an honourary Gurkha at a special dinner in Aberdeen for former soldiers of the historic regiment.

Men from the Nepalese community have fought in the special British army unit for more than 200 years.

And this weekend Lord Provost Barney Crockett attended a dinner at the city’s Gurkha Chef restaurant.

During the evening, he was made an honorary member of the regiment and presented with a special tie and pin.

Mr Crockett said: “It’s an enormous privilege and honour and frankly I’m speechless to have been given this.

“I said during my address that there are many similarities between north-east and Gurkha people.

“We are both from mountainous regions and have excelled in bravery for centuries.

“I hope the strong connection will only be strengthened in the years to come.”
