A dozen community groups working in the north-east have been given a share of a major £1.1 million fund.

The National Lottery has released the names of 167 organisations from across Scotland to receive grants as part of Award for All scheme.

Money has been allocated for building refurbishments, youth programmes and transport for the elderly, among many other causes.

Clan Cancer Support has been awarded £8,640 to refurbish its Aberdeen wellbeing centre, where people with a cancer diagnosis, and their friends and family, can talk about their experience during drop-in sessions.

Iona Mitchell, the charity’s head of cancer support services, said: “We are delighted to receive the award which will allow us to make significant improvements to the environments where we offer our cancer support services.

“We have seen an increase in the number of people using our services and recognise that this demand is likely to continue to increase, and this money will allow us to provide an even better level of comfort and support for those affected by cancer.”

Close to £100,000 is being shared between 12 groups in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Peterhead and District Men’s Shed has plans to build a third wheelchair-accessible workshop, Pathways Services will develop courses on overcoming anxiety, while Invercarron Resource Centre is putting the money towards a bus service to take elderly people to social activities.

A £10,000 grant has been awarded to Sunnybank Community Centre in Aberdeen to build a soft play area for under-threes.

A spokesman said: “We have many families that come to our centre but we were limited on what we could set up for very young children to get them mobile and using all their little limbs.

“This is essential for them as many are in push chairs and car seats, so a safe place to play and crawl and climb will be great.”

A National Lottery Awards for All Scotland spokeswoman said: “Today’s £1.1m funding boost will provide a wide range of community, sport and arts activities for people and families across the country.

“This funding will have a huge impact bringing people together to have fun, learn new skills and meet their neighbours.”
