A special memorial event will be held in Aberdeen next month to remember those who died as a result of drug overdoses.
Shock new figures have revealed that drug deaths in the north and north-east have reached record levels – with 75 dying in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in the past year alone.
Alcohol and Drugs Action will hold a memorial service to remember them on August 31 and are offering training in the specialist Naloxone drug that can save the lives of those who overdose.
A statement online from the charity reads: “Here in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, we lost 75 people to drug-related death in 2018. 75 sets of families and friends lost a loved one.
“But collectively we can work towards reducing harm and enabling recovery.”
The International Overdose Awareness Day event will take place at the Carmelite Hotel in Aberdeen’s Stirling Street on Saturday August 31 at 2pm.
The charity added: “Attendees will have the opportunity to see what local support is available, from peer recovery, to family and bereavement support.
“Training in administration of the potentially life-saving Naloxone will be given to those interested.
“Prior to the event beginning, there will be an opportunity to remember loved ones lost to substance-related death at the ‘Lives worth Remembering’ planter in Carmelite Street.”
