Thunderstorm rolling into the north as weather warning issued

Thunder and lightning is on its way as the Met Office extend warning to the north of Scotland.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been extended north to include Moray, eastern Highlands and Aberdeenshire.

Heavy rainfall alongside thunder and lightning is expected to start around 3pm today and will continue through the night until 4am tomorrow.

A Met Office statement said: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“There is a chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, or damaged by lightning strikes, hail or sudden gusts of wind.”

Flooding

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), has issued a flood alert for parts of the Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire in conjunction with today’s weather warning.

Heavy thundery showers are expected to hit Caithness and Sutherland that could affect the flood alert area from this evening through until Friday morning.

A SEPA statement said: “These showers are likely to be very isolated, so many areas will not be affected. However where they do occur the heavy downpours could result in surface water flooding impacts.

SEPA have issued a flood alert in Caithness and Sutherland.

“The greatest risk is if these occur over urban areas and the transport network. Impacts could include flooding to low-lying land, roads and properties, and disruption to travel.

“There is also a risk of localised flooding from small or fast-responding rivers if the heaviest showers occur over these areas.”

SEPA have issued a flood alter across Findhorn, Nairn, and Speyside.

The same risk of flooding is anticipated across Moray and Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City with potential “localised flooding from small or fast-responding rivers if the heaviest showers occur over these areas.”

SEPA has issued a flood alert for Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire.

SEPA is reminding people to be vigilant in such conditions with further advise found on their website.
