Aberdeen man threatened gutter-cleaning workmen with axe in ‘complete overreaction’

An Aberdeen man threatened workmen with an axe for denting his car while they cleaned his gutters.

At around 9.30am on Tuesday, November 6, Richard Bruce heard banging and laughing outside his Frederick Street flat so stepped out to see what was happening.

But he quickly became irate, and began shouting and swearing, after spotting that debris from the work overhead had damaged his car.

The 47-year-old briefly went back inside his home then returned brandishing an axe at the trio of frightened men, and threatening to injure them.

Bruce appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday where he admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner, and possessing an offensive weapon.

Fiscal depute, Lynne Macvicor, said the accused “took umbrage” when “debris fell onto his car”.

Defence solicitor, Neil McRobert, explained that his client was a former labourer and that the axe formed part of his toolkit.

He added: “He has a history of problems in the flats with noise and issues with neighbours causing disturbances in the property.”

Sheriff Donald Ferguson said: “This was obviously a complete overreaction and thankfully the incident ended where it did.”

Bruce was fined £335, to be paid at a rate of £30 per month.
