Would-be thieves have targeted a community cafe within an Aberdeen church.
The culprits broke into Striders Coffee Shop, within Bridge of Don Baptist Church on Sunday night.
Although nothing was stolen, a number of home baked goods were taken out from the freezer and packed into carrier bags.
Café manager Ros Leslie said: “We were really fortunate despite the circumstances.
“Our alarm system alerted the people who live opposite the church and they called it in.
“It disturbed them in the middle of whatever they were doing and left through the broken window.
“They could have done so much more damage, but we were fortunate they didn’t.”
The incident happened between 10.15pm and 10.30pm on Sunday.
PC Bryan Bruce, of the Danestone community policing team, said: “We believe that the person or persons responsible were disturbed as boxes of home baking had been removed from a freezer, with the possible intention of being stolen, but left out.
“While nothing was stolen, and the food items were able to be salvaged, damage estimated at a low three figure sum was caused to the building as a result of the incident.”
Mrs Leslie said the vandals had put the frozen baked goods into bags, but left them abandoned on the kitchen’s counter top.
She added: “Everything we do is non-profit and run by volunteers who come in early to do all the baking.
“All the profits go back into the community. This last year we were able to give to Charlie House and the Bridge of Don First Responders – it’s all plugged back into our area.
“We have had a lot of really supportive messages and had some volunteers who came in after the morning after the break-in to help clean up.
“People make really lousy choices for different reasons and I’m really sorry to hear that they are in such a dark place they chose to break into a small church coffee shop.
“But actions have consequences, we don’t bear them any ill will but I hope they find their way.”
PC Bruce added: “The home baking is made by church members and the profits are donated to local causes.
“It’s therefore disappointing that a local church and their enterprise to raise money for the local community was targeted.”
