A group of joggers have clubbed together to raise funds for a defibrillator for the west end of Aberdeen.

Fit Like Joggers have purchased a community defibrillator after a year of fundraising.

The club, who do four scheduled runs a week, was created in late 2015.

This year they set out to raise the £1,295 for a defibrillator, and managed to smash that target – through a variety of quiz nights, raffles and a race night – and reach £3,200.

Now the the jogging group has joined forces with the Mariner Hotel, which is open 24 hours, to install it in the front lobby.

David Scott, founder of the club, said: “I’ve done a first aid course before and know how important defibs can be, especially in rural areas, in saving someone’s life.

“They are so important, even if the ambulance is just a few minutes away it can still make a massive difference.

“Our fundraising was really good – we completed exceeded our target and it really brought people together.”

The money left over from the fundraising drive will go towards training club members and hotel staff on how to use the defib and first aid.

North East MSP Liam Kerr praised the group’s efforts in a parliamentary motion this week.

Last night he praised the club, along with other organisations in the north-east that have helped to get more defibrillators in their communities.

He said: “Congratulations to the Fit Like Joggers.

“Their outstanding commitment has produced not just the kit but the training to use this piece of life-saving equipment.

“It’s great to see so many defibrillators around the north-east, all made possible by community groups.”
