A “pop-up” event to ensure EU citizens can stay in Aberdeen after Brexit has been held in the city.

Home Office caseworkers say more than 90,000 applications from Scotland have already been made to the EU Settlement Scheme.

The initiative, which will be open until at least December 2020, guarantees the rights of EU citizens in UK law and ensures they can remain in the country.

A roadshow visited Aberdeen on Wednesday, where staff were on hand to offer advice and help with applications.

Minister of State for the Home Office, Brandon Lewis, said: “EU citizens in Aberdeen are our friends, families and neighbours and have made a huge contribution to the local community.

“These events across the UK will help raise awareness of the EU Settlement Scheme and explain to EU citizens how they can guarantee their rights in law.

“EU citizens have until at least December 2020 to apply and there’s plenty of support available to do so.”

Ines Shek, from Aberdeen Citizens Advice, said: “We offer a national helpline, which is available five days a week, and all are welcome to come to attend face-to-face appointments or drop-ins at local bureaux across Scotland.”
