University students go green in advance of post-apocalyptic film production

A group of students are taking on an ambitious project of producing a post-apocalyptic film shot entirely in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeen University Filmmaking Society was founded in 2000 with the aim of letting people have fun while learning how to create films.

The team of 40 will begin its third and most ambitious project to date, a film titled 2035.

Its story centres around a post-apocalyptic world after humans have exhausted natural resources and war has broken out.

Sofia Ferrara, producer of the project, described the film as “topical” and added it had been inspired by the current climate crisis.

She added: “It’s a pretty low-budget film, but we are looking to fundraise £1,200 to cover costs.

“As students, we’re very much aware of the ongoing climate emergency and climate crisis. We thought it was a topical issue, especially since we are in Aberdeen – the capital of oil and gas.

“It’s a great place to have this discussion.”

Ms Ferrara, an Aberdeen University student, said the cast and crew have pledged to reduce its carbon footprint for the duration of the filming.

The team is aiming to reuse old props and materials, source costumes from charity shops, find sustainable catering, reduce the use of plastic and paper and reduce waste while enforcing a recycling disposal.

She said: “When we thought about this, we realised it would be a bit hypocritical that our movie is about the consequences of the climate emergency and not do anything about it.”
