Aberdeen Airport has joined forces with a helicopter firm to raise more than £14,800 for a north-east charity.

The donation was presented to Befriend A Child chief executive Sarah Misra by representatives from the airport and CHC Helicopter.

A separate donation of £14,810 from this year’s racing event was also made to the charity Veterans with Dogs.

The second Aberdeen Runway Run, organised by CHC Helicopter captain Ryan Broadhurst and the Aberdeen International Airport operations team, featured 300 runners taking to the airport runway for a midnight run, tackling a distance of 3.5km.

Richard Strachan finished first, completing the course in a record 11 minutes 14 seconds. He was followed by Jamie Reid at 12 minutes and two seconds and Mark McDonald MSP at 12 minutes and 18 seconds.

Steve Szalay, managing director at Aberdeen International Airport, said: “The Runway Run was a fantastic night and it was great to see the efforts of Captain Ryan Broadhurst from CHC raise so much money for amazing causes.

“It is a testament to the hard work put in by both the organisers and the runners.

“We are looking forward to working with CHC Helicopter next year to continue to host the unique event, but more importantly, to support local charities.”

Mr Broadhurst added: “Returning to Aberdeen International Airport to run this event for a second year has been a rewarding experience.”
